Languages spoken in Puerto Rico
by Juan Figueroa
Spanish is the main language spoken in Puerto Rico followed by English. In Puerto Rico 90% of the population speak Spanish all the time unless they don't have any other choice. Every school in Puerto Rico teaches you both, Spanish and English but they focus more on Spanish and teach you English as a second language.
So feel free to plan a trip to Puerto Rico because once you get there if you need to communicate you won't have any problem since in San Juan and most of the areas close to the tourist areas people are bilingual. If you go to a non-tourist place even if they don't talk back to you, if you talk to them slowly they will understand you and they will be able to help you. Read Languages Spoken in Puerto Rico
Misconceptions about Spanish
Some believe that the Spanish language spoken in Puerto Rico, Mexico and Spain varies widely from one country to the next. However, this is far from true. The Spanish spoken around the world is for the most part standardized. In other words, the Spanish language spoken in one Spanish country can easily be understood by another Spanish speaker in another Spanish speaking country. The same generally holds true for the Spanish taught, in classrooms in non-Spanish speaking countries, around the world; it is Standardized Spanish. We, Puerto Ricans identify ourselves as Boricuas, a word that originated from the Taino word Boriken (also known as Boriquen, Borinquen, or Borinquen), to illustrate our recognition of our Taino heritage.
The word Boriken, which means "the great land of the valiant and noble Lord", was used by the original Taino Indian population to refer to the island of Puerto Rico before the arrival of the Spaniards.
The use of the word Boricua has been popularized by descendents of Puerto Rico heritage, commonly using the phrase, "Yo soy Boricua" to identify ourselves as Puerto Ricans.
